HEIC vs JPG: why your iPhone photos won't open
You email a few photos from your iPhone to a colleague, or upload them to a web form, and something goes wrong: the files arrive with a .heic extension that Windows Photo Viewer shrugs at, the upload form rejects them, or the printing service says the format is unsupported.
Nothing is broken. Your phone is simply using a newer, better format that the rest of the world has been slow to adopt.
What HEIC actually is
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s implementation of HEIF, a container format that stores images compressed with HEVC — the same codec family used for H.265 video. Apple made it the camera default in iOS 11, back in 2017.
The reason is straightforward: HEIC stores roughly the same visual quality as JPG in about half the file size. On a phone where you might keep 20,000 photos, halving the storage is a big deal. HEIC also supports things JPG cannot: 16-bit colour depth (JPG is limited to 8-bit), transparency, and multiple images in one file, which is how Live Photos and burst sequences are stored.
Technically it is a clear upgrade over a format designed in 1992. The problem is entirely one of ecosystem support.
Why it won’t open

Two things make this worse than a simple “install a plugin” problem. First, the Windows extension was, for a period, a paid item in the Microsoft Store, which caused a lot of confusion. Second, even when the operating system can display HEIC, individual applications — an old version of Photoshop, a Java-based upload widget on a government portal — may still refuse it.
The two ways to fix it
1. Convert the files you already have
The fastest fix for photos already on your device is to convert them to JPG. Use our HEIC to JPG converter: drop the files in, download standard JPGs.
Worth knowing: because those photos are usually personal — family, documents, ID pictures — the conversion happens entirely in your browser here. Your photos are never uploaded to anyone’s server. Most HEIC converters you find online do the opposite: they upload your photo library to a machine you know nothing about. For holiday snaps that may not matter to you; for a scanned passport it should.
2. Stop your iPhone producing HEIC
If you routinely send photos to Windows users or upload them to forms, change the camera setting once and forget about it:
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible
Your phone will shoot JPG from then on. The trade-off is real — the files will be roughly twice the size — but if compatibility keeps costing you time, it is usually worth it.
There is also a middle path many people miss. Leave the camera on High Efficiency, but set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic. With that enabled, iOS converts HEIC to JPG when transferring off the device, so you keep the storage savings on the phone and get compatible files on your computer.
Does converting lose quality?
Slightly, and usually invisibly.
HEIC is a lossy format and so is JPG, so converting means decoding one lossy image and re-encoding it into another. That is technically a second generation of loss. At a high JPG quality setting the difference is not perceptible in normal viewing — but it is not free, and it is why you should keep the HEIC originals if the photos matter. Convert copies, not your archive.
You will also lose HEIC-specific features in the conversion: Live Photo motion, depth maps, and any editing history are not representable in a JPG. The still frame survives; the extras do not.
Expect the JPG to be roughly 1.5 to 2 times larger than the HEIC it came from. If that pushes you over an upload limit, compress the result afterwards — and see our guide on hitting an exact KB target.
Should you convert everything?
No. If your photos live on Apple devices and you view them there, HEIC is the better format and converting your whole library would double its size for no benefit.
Convert selectively, when you have a specific reason:
- Sending photos to Windows or Android users
- Uploading to a form or service that rejects HEIC
- Printing through a service that does not support it
- Editing in older software
- Embedding images on a website (browsers largely will not display HEIC)
What about the future?
Support is improving, but slowly, and JPG’s universality is hard to beat — it works everywhere, on everything, with no plugins. For long-term archiving and for anything you need to hand to another person, JPG remains the safe default even though it is technically the weaker format.
For the web specifically, the interesting successors are not HEIC but WebP and AVIF, which browsers do support natively and which achieve similar or better compression. Summary
HEIC is not a broken file, it is a newer format that saves you half the storage at the cost of compatibility. Convert copies to JPG when you need to hand them to the outside world, switch the camera to “Most Compatible” if that happens often, and keep your originals either way.
