Converting to PNG will not repair a JPG. Detail discarded by JPEG compression is gone permanently, and the PNG simply stores the damaged image losslessly — in a much bigger file. Expect the result to be several times larger than the JPG.
What it does buy you is a stopping point. Every time a JPG is edited and re-saved it loses a little more, so converting to PNG before a round of heavy editing prevents that generation loss from stacking up.
