Browser support is no longer a reason to hesitate: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari have all supported WebP since 2020. Where it still bites is outside the browser, since many editors, print services and upload forms do not accept it. Convert for your website, not for files you are sending to other people.
Format change is not a substitute for the basics. Serving a 4000-pixel image into a 600-pixel slot wastes most of those bytes whatever the format, so resize to the size you actually display first and convert second — the two savings compound.
